The story of Jack and Jill, and Billie the Kid ...

Jack-Daddy, a little over 2 years old

Our goat fiasco started with the rescue-purchase of Jack. He was a very sick kid being sold by a slaughterhouse. I could not pass up his wonderful personality and adorable face.

When purchased, Jack was three months old but the size of a new born. I am told that his mother passed while kidding. Jack was nursed cows milk, then fed horse feed. Anyone who raises goats knows that goats should not be given cows milk and never fed horse feed. Needless-to-say, Jack was very weak, sick and lonely. We spent many a dollars and endless hours caring for him. He slept in the house, and enjoyed warm spring days outside. It was quite the adventure for us; we were first year farmers.

As a kid, Jack brought much joy to my family members and neighbors.  He napped on everyone?s lap and all enjoyed feeding him carrots, string beans and whatever else I bought to supplement his goat diet. Jack would not drink anything but lemon-lime Gatorade and it had to be from a bottle. I successfully weaned him off Gatorade and he now enjoys water from a bucket.  In the summer months, he gets watered down lemon-lime Gatorade (in a bucket).

Jillian was purchased in the spring of 2007 (she was my Mother's Day present to myself).  She is more than friendly and keeps us laughing all the time. When she first arrived, the other goats were mean to her so I put her in the sheep.  Now, she refuses to live with the goats and thinks that she is a sheep;  Jillian grazes like a sheep and hangs out in the rain.

Billie the Kid is 50% boer, 25% pygmy and 25% nigerian.  I call him our teacup boer: at birth he weighted about 3 pounds.  Maria, our  1/2 nigerian and 1/2 pygmy doe, finds her way into the buck's area every season. Apparently, Jack was successful in covering her last fall.  Jack's new nick name is Jack-Daddy. He is very excited and proud of his accomplishment. Prior to this, Joseph was our only successful mating buck. Congratulations Jack!
